Once Upon A Time… {Kidsplace Featured Friday}

{The Fairy Tale by Walther Firle}
{The Fairy Tale by Walther Firle}

I’m the first to admit it … I’m a sucker for fairy tales. (Who doesn’t love The Princess Bride?) The love of a good story transcends all ages, and our little ones will be getting a taste this week (Nov. 4 – 8) with our “Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes” theme at Kidsplace!

Read on for a bit of an update and a link to a fun fairy tale game to play at home!

Teddy Bears Go to School! {Kidsplace Featured Friday}

You can’t really tell, but these little guys are excited! They’re all vying for the coveted place in my son’s backpack (and will likely lose out to his favourite stuffie, Puppy!) when the Kidsplace kids learn all about Teddy Bears next week (Sept. 23 – 27)!

There will be a special opportunity for the kids to bring their favourite teddy bears to school…

ABCs and 123s {Kidsplace Featured Friday}

Alphabet Magnets5

It’s always exciting when a little one masters spelling his or her name for the first time, or can accurately display the right numbers of fingers for how old they are! This week (March 4 – 8) we’re talking ABCs and 123s at Kidsplace! Just click on the “Read More About ABCs and 123s” tag to read the rest of the post and find some great links…including an online version of the perennial ABC favourite Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!

See, Taste, Hear, Smell, Touch {Kidsplace Featured Friday}

Mmmm, popcorn. Did you know that this yummy treat can be used in a simple experiment about the five senses? Try it with your kids! Pop a batch and and write down your observations: What do you see? What do you hear? What do you smell? What does it feel like? And best of all…how does it TASTE?!

You may have guessed it already…but this week (February 19-22) our Kidsplace theme is the Five Senses! Get ready for lots of fun!

There is no school on Monday, February 18.

Scholastic book orders are due February 19.

Show and Tell takes place this week! Please refer to the calendar (click HERE for the PDF) or ask your teacher for your child’s day.

We have added a new fundraising page to our website. You can click on the link in the menu above, or HERE. You will find information on this page about our upcoming Glenlea Greenhouses fundraiser, as well as information about our second spring fundraiser as soon as that information is available.

Kidsplace sun onlyComing up in March…our annual Open House! This event will take place March 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the school. Do you have friends or relatives who might be interested in Kidsplace? This is a great way for them to check out the classroom, meet the teachers, and sign-up for next year! Ask your teacher re. early pre-registration for returning students.

It’s Still Cold… {Kidsplace Featured Friday}

(kenneth rempel photo)

Did you think that warm weather was going to stick around? Yeah, me too…

But however much the parents groan, more cold and snow means more fun at Kidsplace! Our “Fun in the Snow” theme continues this week (January 14-18) with more snowy activities for the kids to enjoy!

Need a few fun ideas for what to do with all that snow? Check out these ideas at I Can Teach My Child (including snow ice cream! Yum!)

And if snow is really not your thing, check out this idea (from Meaningful Mama) for those Christmas thank you cards that still need to go out.

The first Scholastic Book Order of the new year is due January 21.

Show and Tell! Monday/Wednesday/Friday class will be showing and telling on January 21, 23, and 25 and the Tuesday/Thursday class will show and tell on January 22 and 24. Listen for announcements regarding your child’s specific day.

Sign up for fall! It’s almost that time of year again! If you plan on returning to Kidsplace this fall, or have younger children who will be attending for the first time, early registration will be opening in February, with general registration opening March 5.

Have you ever considered volunteering at Kidsplace? We love to have parents come in to help out during class time (especially in our larger classes!) If you would like to volunteer, please talk to Ms. Lori or Ms. Sherry.

We also still need to fill three important positions on our board: vice president, fundraising coordinator and member-at-large. A brief run-down: the VP helps with registrations, the fundraising person helps coordinate fundraising, and the member-at-large helps contact alumni who may have returning students or younger children that could come to Kidsplace next year. Can you help? Give us a call or talk to the teachers!

Planes, Trains and Mom’s Pantry {Kidsplace Featured Friday}

“Toot, toot, chugga, chugga, Big Red Carrrrr…” (C’mon, you know the words…sing along!) This little ditty has been on the (ultra)request list this week at our house. Kids love to move, and when there’s wheels, wings or engines of any sort involved, even better!

So it’s most likely that our little ones are going to have lots of fun this week (November 19-23) at Kidsplace, as we enjoy our “Transportation” theme!

Speaking of transportation…thank you to everyone who came to help unload the Peak of the Market truck a couple of weeks ago! It was very appreciated! Missed out on that one? No problem! We’ll have more unloading and sorting to do when our Mom’s Pantry orders arrive in mid-December (watch for the dates coming soon…likely Dec. 13 or 18, 5:30 p.m.)

Mom’s Pantry is an excellent holiday fundraiser and will be starting this week! Order forms will be available on Monday and Wednesday and closes at 4 p.m. December 4. No late orders will be accepted. An even easier option? You can order online! Just visit www.momspantry.ca, create an account, and then go to “fundraising.” Our group order number is 93819 and the pass code is 26781.

Book Orders Due Soon!

Our order deadline for the December Scholastic catalogues is fast approaching. To order those books for in time for Christmas giving, please have your orders and cheques (made out to Scholastic Canada) in to your teacher no later than November 28. Remember…Kidsplace earns credits from these orders to buy new classroom books and materials!

Save the Date!

The annual Kidsplace Christmas program and party will be coming soon! Mark December 20 (T/TH classes) and December 21 (M/W/F class) on your calendar! The program will take place in the classroom during regular class hours. There is very limited seating, so immediate family only, please!

Couple O’Reminders

We’re still going outside while the weather is nice, so be sure your child brings a winter jacket, snowpants, mitts and hat to school! Practice putting these on at home to help make getting dressed at school a snap!

And finally…we need paper towels! This is one of those supplies that we use A LOT at Kidsplace, and to help keep our budget costs down, we’ve asked each family to bring in a roll or two. If you could help in this way, that would be greatly appreciated!

Have a great week!

Squeaky Clean {Kidsplace Featured Friday}

It’s Health and Nutrition week (Nov. 5-9) at Kidsplace! Our little ones will be busy learning ways to keep our bodies healthy and strong as well as some of those oh-so-important rules of hygiene.

Did you know a single sneeze can go as far as three feet? (Let’s all say “ewwww” together, now.) So imagine a room full of preschoolers during cold and flu season…you get the idea! We need your help to keep those nasty bugs at bay in our classroom. We depend on parent volunteers to help clean our room and toys, generally every other week. It only takes about an hour, and it qualifies as one of the mini-jobs that are a requirement for each Kidsplace family. Check with your teacher to see how you can help! (And a big thank you in advance!)

Reminders of All Sorts

Peak of the Market arrives this week! If you can help unload the truck between 5 and 6 p.m. on November 6, please contact our fundraising coordinator, Angeline, at byczekfamily@gmail.com. Orders MUST be picked up between 6:30 and 8 p.m.

Next up for fundraising…the ever popular Mom’s Pantry! Watch for more details coming soon!

Picture orders are due November 6, and Scholastic orders are due November 7.

Our Annual General Meeting is taking place November 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Calvin Christian School library (same building as Kidsplace). Please plan to attend this event to meet the teachers and board and find out what’s happening with your school!

And finally, our first field trip, to the Henderson branch of the Winnipeg Public Library, will take place November 15 (Tues/Thurs a.m. class, approx. 10 a.m.-11 a.m.; p.m. class approx. 2 p.m.-3 p.m. ) and November 16 (Mon/Wed/Fri class, approx. 10 a.m.-11 a.m.). It will include a special story time and some book browsing afterwards.  As many of you may already have a library card, you are welcome to take out books, and for those of you who do not have a library card it is a good way to see what the library has to offer.  Permission forms for this trip will be sent home soon.

Please note that parents/guardians are required to accompany the children on field trips. If you need to arrange for an alternate adult to accompany your child, please let the teachers know or indicate the name of the person on the permission form.
